Marbecks closes more music stores

Marbecks are shutting their Dunedin store, tho the cafe attached to it will remain open. In January they announced plans to focus more on the cafe side of that location.

Marbecks are also closing down the pop/rock shop in Auckland's Queens Arcade. Some good news though, Roger Marbeck is keeping Marbecks Classical open down there. Marbecks Classical is owned separately from Marbecks pop/rock shop in Queens Arcade. Final day is in about two weeks, apparently.

From Marbecks Queens Arcade Facebook page...

"FINAL CURTAIN... Hi friends, we are shutting up shop for good on October 14, which is bad news for us but good news for your wallets.

We're having a 50% OFF EVERYTHING SALE from now until our final day.

For those who haven't visited our store for a while there are many, many gems in store yet to find a happy home. Maybe that home could be yours, or maybe a music and film loving friend's home? Please share this post with your audio-visual fanatic friends who do enjoy a bargain or two.

There is somewhat of a happier music store story though -Marbecks Classical, Jazz & Specialist Imports are staying open, and in fact will be expanding both their store size, and their range, so there will still be at least one fantastic store located in Queens Arcade. They're not going anywhere.

Thanks to all of you who have shopped here over the years and requested all manner of weird and wonderful titles. Your patronage has been much appreciated by the in-store team."

Roger Marbeck took the Queens Arcade Classical store back in April of this year, and there was a big publicity push to get the word out in August. No word on any job losses.

Nile Rodgers talks

via Dublab...."Nile Rodgers talks about his recent collaborations with electronic music producers and artists including the French duo Daft Punk, Swedish DJ/producer Avicii, and David Guetta. Over the course of the interview he also discusses his early beginnings as a young jazz guitarist who viewed all pop and dance music with condescension, and learning a harsh but valuable lesson which led him to being an open and honest musician."

Crate diggers: Gaslamp killer

Via Fuse TV: "The producer, who co-founded the popular weekly Low End Theory parties in 2006, shares how Guns N' Roses, Too $hort, a vegan Indian restaurant and seeing punk bands at age 11 all shaped his musical pedigree. Check out the video above to learn about obscure Turkish funk, music for plants and rare Flying Lotus test pressings, among many others."

Jules Issa/Nightline

Jules Issa singing, backed by Lady Lee. Great introduction from TV3 Nightline co-anchor Belinda Todd, and the closing credits music is also a tune that featured on an early Deepgrooves release, by Strawpeople.

Trivia: The funky backing music doesn't sound like it's the version that ended up getting released on Jules' mini album Found In You, and it's not the more mellow mix that was the NZonAir Hitdisc version either.

Deepgrooves has recently reissued Found In You by  Jules Issa, check it on iTunes. There's three versions of Dangerous Game, plus a dub with Tuffi Culture guesting.

Metal Dance 2

"Trevor Jackson's first Metal Dance collection ended up making quite a splash last year, topping Resident Advisor's Top Compilations of 2012 list, and hipping a new generation to some of the darkest, most adventurous industrial, EBM and post-punk sounds from the electronic '80s. Even at two discs long, though, it merely scratched the surface of Jackson's deep collection. Metal Dance 2 continues the journey.

With the bar set high by the first collection, Trevor has dug deep for the second volume to include records that simply need to be heard to be believed, from pounding early Ministry to Haruomi Hosono's intricate electronics and Rene Bandali's rare Lebanese electro.

As always, LP orders through the Strut store arrive on limited edition 180 gram vinyl which is unavailable elsewhere. Metal Dance 2 is out October 15th on 2LP, 2CD & digital download.

In addition, CD & LP pre-orders through the Strut store will receive a bonus one hour mix CD from Trevor Jackson featuring music from the collection."
